Initial training for new volunteers is two half-days plus a 3-hour orientation for all volunteers. The program then runs for 6 weeks of 3-hour lessons per week with your student. Some programs ask a little more, depending on the needs of the students. There is also the opportunity be in a pool of volunteers that help with DROP-IN Lessons, as they are requested throughout the season.
VASS organizes the required training for its volunteers, and it is usually scheduled in early January. You will need to take either the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors (CASI) or Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance (CSIA) overview course (1 day) and the CADS Level 1 course ( 2.5 days). Additionally, there is ongoing training throughout the season so you can continue to learn and thrive. If for some reason you are unable to take the training prior to volunteering, you can sign up as an on-hill assistant until it is complete.
BCAS and CADS are our provincial and national bodies and they hold our liability insurance. Furthermore, supporting these organizations ensure that adaptive snow sports continues to grow in knowledge acquisition and reach locally, provincially and nationally.
Our students are assigned 2 instructors, with a new instructor always being paired with an experienced instructor.
