Our new Executive Director – Laurie Cooper
Here’s a short note from our new Executive Director Laurie Cooper:
I am so excited to be on the VASS team! Skiing has been an important part of my life since I was very young. When I was five years old, my father put me on a pair of homemade wooden skis and sent me down the Goldie Rope Tow on Mount Seymour. Twenty years later, I met my husband in my CSIA Level 1 instructor course and, two years later, he proposed to me – on skis – at the top of Whistler Mountain.
My professional background includes more than 25 years in broadcast journalism, communications and public relations. My skiing background includes teaching skiing in Switzerland, Whistler and, most recently, as a volunteer at Mount Seymour. I also had the opportunity to volunteer with DSABC many, many years ago and I found it incredibly rewarding.
I am not a particularly brave or brilliant skier, but I love being on the mountain and I am delighted to be able to share my passion and enthusiasm with the VASS volunteers and students. I can’t wait to meet everybody and I look forward to seeing you all on the slopes.
All the best,
Laurie
VASS Cup – a huge success!
To all our VASS Cup participants, here is a heartfelt “Thank-You” for your involvement in yesterday’s hugely successful VASS Cup!!
This year we were blessed with ideal weather conditions for our race. We had great tunes and a snappy MC at the top of the run, and numerous “Hurrahs” and high-fives at the bottom! The Sledge hockey was once again the “hot seat” on the mountain with a constant crowd of people wanting to try their skills at the sport. Our silent auction was filled with donations, all expertly managed and displayed! Thank you to everyone who made a donation or posted a winning bid! It took a small army to organize and run the event, from registering everyone at the bottom to setting the race course at the top, whether tracking the racers times or the auction bids, speaking to the media or to those gathered for our banquet, our deepest appreciation to every person who helped make this years VASS Cup a truly exceptional occasion!
Mark Hopkins’ “I have a dream…” speech brought to life the passion and importance VASS has on the lives of those who participate in our programs. You are now a part of his dream and your participation yesterday will literally “change people’s lives”.
Perhaps “VASS Magic” was shown most clearly in the shriek of delight from Vicki Mooney when her NCR team was announced as the winners of the VASS cup. Sounds of pure joy, coming from a young woman who is usually non-verbal! Vicki was not the only winner at yesterday’s event. Everyone participating was a winner in helping VASS to carry out our mission to “Make the Mountain Accessible to All!”
The VASS Cup is the primary fundraising event of the year for Vancouver Adaptive Snow Sports. It is critical to maintaining our organization and the programs we offer on Vancouver’s three local ski mountains.
THANK YOU for your role in the 2012 VASS Cup – we hope to see you there again next year!
…with a friend!
